STONES AND MEANINGS Audrée Grace
Gemstones have been used as far back as the beginning of human civilization for both their beauty, durability, and rarity. Most gems begin as crystals of minerals and a few limited noncrystal materials are classified as gemstones, usually referred to as organic gems. Examples are pearls, amber and corals. Less than 100 identified minerals are used to make jewelry because most are too soft or brittle to cut or wear as jewelry.
With in the 100 gemstones used for jewelry, only a minority of them are of major importance. At the top of the list are "precious" gems like diamonds, sapphires, rubies & emeralds. Others are semiprecious. Among the most saught after are alexandrites, aquamarines, sunstones, moonstones, kyanite, larimar, citrine, garnets & changing garnets, labradorite, agate, jade, lapis lazuli, peridot, carnelian, tanzanite, amazonite, opal, sodalite, aragonite (pearl), quartz in all varities, spinel, topaz, tourmalines, turquoise, malachite, apatite and zircons.
There are records from ancient times that indicate the first beliefs were many among stones having a "mystic" value. Zodiac and birthstones have been around for centuries. Even today New Age practictioners believe gemstones have healing powers;

Gemstones both precious and semiprecious have been used throughout history for spiritual, emotional and physical healing. New Age or Alternative Healers all over the world still use gemstones today. Whether conscious or unconscious they believe they have mental and emotional influences in healing. Perhaps the belief that the crystals/gemstones will heal the body causes the body to heal, rather than the crystal or stone itself. You be the judge!
